New Location for Early Bib Pickup in 2015

E-mail Print PDF

Early bib pickup for the Equinox Marathon, Ultramarathon and Relay will be in a new location in 2015.  This year early bib pickup will be at the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts at Pioneer Park (the building formerly known as the Civic Center at the park formerly known as Alaskaland).

As usual, bib pickup will be open from 5:00PM to 8:00PM on the Thursday and Friday immediately preceding race day.  This year that will be September 17 and 18.

Also as usual, we will need volunteers to help with early bib pickup to make it happen efficiently. Please contact Monte Jordan (mjresourceak at gmail.com), if you can help out.

Vendor's booths are available for $100 for both nights or $75 for Friday only.  Please contact Susan Kramer if you or a business you know are interested in vendor space.

This year the spaghetti feed will be FRIDAY NIGHT ONLY.  The feed, co-sponsored by SMG Catering, will cost $5 for children ages 12 and under, and $10 if you pay online when you enter, $15 at the door.  Net proceeds from the Spaghetti Feed defray the costs of organizing the event.

The Spirit of the Equinox Award Background and History

E-mail Print PDF

The Spirit of the Equinox Award was established in 1986 in memory of George Bloom.

Georgie ran the Equinox Marathon 18 consecutive years and felt that it was the ultimate running event.  The award is to exemplify what Georgie stood for in the running community -- someone who was always willing to lend a hand, organize a race, offer an encouraging word, and was quick with a smile and a wave.

The award recipients are selected by a committee consisting of the members of the local running community and one person from Georgie's immediate family.  The recipients of this award are not required to have run the Equinox Marathon.  In fact, they need not even be runners.  The committee bases their selection of the recipient on these criteria:

  • Contribution to the running community
  • How inspirational the recipient is to others
  • Overall attitude and enthusiasm toward others

2014 Spirit of the Equinox - Bob Vitale

E-mail Print PDF

The winner of the Spirit of the Equinox Award for 2014 is Bob Vitale. Following is the presentation by Tracey Martinson.

This year's recipient has been in Fairbanks for a long, long, long time.  Forty years, in fact!  This person started running about 30 years ago, on a cold and wintery day when the temperature hovered at 30-below zero.  [Who takes up running in the middle of a Fairbanks winter?!]  At any rate, this person's domestic partner was pretty sure it was going to be a fluke--a one-time deal and then the silliness would be over.  But the person came back, all frosted-up and icicle-laden, with a smirk that you could see growing in size as warmth returned to the body.  This person was certifiably hooked!
And so it continued, miles and miles, hour after hour... This person fell in with some notorious runners (initials S.M. and M.-E. L.*).  The three of them liked to run for hours, bushwhacking through alder thickets on epic cross-country treks.  Word has it that they even planned a South American running adventure but flight and travel snafus conspired to ensure that all they had to show for it was a trip to Miami and back.  At any rate, this is rather fitting since this person originally hails from southern Florida. [That's a clue, folks...]
From a running standpoint, this person has been involved in Running Club North since its inception in 1993, quietly working behind the scenes as RCN Calendar Liaison and editor of the Running Briefs newsletter.  This person worked with Dave Cowee to develop the first RCN website in 1996.  More recent projects include serving on the RCN board as Vice President and President, and working tirelessly on Equinox Marathon course access issues.  This person runs in all the races--completing the entire trail series this year and taking 1st place in the 45-and-over category.

And without further ado, I am pleased to bestow the 2014 Spirit of the Equinox award on Bob Vitale!

*  S.M. = Sandy Murray;  M.-E. L. = Mary Ellen LeBerge.
