Equinox Marathon To Offer Prize Money in 2012

E-mail Print PDF

For the first time in it's history, the Equinox Marathon will offer prize money to the first five finishers in both the men's and women's marathons.  Prize money will not be awarded for the ultramarathon or the relay.

The prize money schedule is:

  • First place - $300
  • Second place - $200
  • Third place - $150
  • Fourth place - $100
  • Fifth place - $50

The prize checks will be awarded at the Equinox Marathon Awards Ceremony and Banquet Saturday night.  In addition to the prize money the standing bonuses for course records remain, these are:

  • Men's marathon course record - $500
  • Women's marathon course record - $500
  • Relay course record/men's team - $100/person for three members
  • Relay course record/women's team - $100/person for three members

Note re: relay team awards:  if any members are not eligible to receive prize money [e.g. NCAA or high school athletes], the money for that runner/those runners is not awarded.  The unawarded money is not split among the other team members.

The decision to award prize money was made by the Equinox Marathon Advisory Committee (EMAC) at its June meeting.  The hope is that providing an incentive will draw a few more top-level runners to the event.  The EMAC did NOT want to spend money to bring in celebrity runners or high-level runners and felt that rewarding performance after the fact was a better way to go.
