60th Annual Equinox Marathon
31st Annual Equinox Relay

Equinox 2024 Changes and Updates

In 2024, the Equinox runs will be held on September 21. They will include the 61st running of the Equinox Marathon and, returning for the first time since 2019, the Equinox Relay. There will not be a Half marathon.

We appreciate that many non-Marathoners may be disappointed that there will be no Half. The RCN Board assures all that this was a difficult choice. Interest in the Relay and the Half seems split about equally among potential non-Marathoners. However, the Relay had been a part of the Equinox runs for a number of years until COVID precautions mandated it be not run starting in 2020. With COVID now largely managed, the RCN Board chose to bring back the Relay in 2024 because it felt it important that the Relay be run in the post-COVID environment.

That said, if you are very interested in the half-marathon distance, note that there are at least four other half-marathon distance races in the area to choose from. Two are official half marathons—the Santa Claus Half Marathon and the HooDoo Half Marathon. Two others are half marathon distance races—the Two Way Torture Test and the Musk Ox Trail Run.

We trust you understand the decision of the RCN Board to reinstate the Relay in 2024. If you have comments or questions, please email eqmanagement@runningclubnorth.org. RCN looks forward to welcoming you to the Equinox runs on September 21.

Race Day Parking

Equinox Participants:

There will be limited parking at the start/finish area. UAF has multiple events happening later that evening that they will be preparing for. Which means the lower lot across the street of the start/finish line will be closed for parking. Please do not attempt to take down the fencing to park there. If you park there, you will be towed.

The same goes for the banquet: parking will be limited that evening as well. Plan accordingly.

We advise you to carpool or be dropped off. There will be parking at the SRC and the Patty Center parking lots.

Course Updates

Below is some course information:

  • The course will be well marked by our gracious volunteers. I still advise that you take a look at the course maps off of the Race Info page, so you have an idea of where you are going.
  • Full marathoners will be following the RED plates placed on stakes. Half marathoners will be following BLUE plates placed on stakes.
  • Volunteers will be out there directing you where to go. There will be traffic controllers at railroad crossings and other key locations. Please respect them and if they tell you to wait due to traffic or a train coming, please wait. They are there for your safety.
  • The course is rerouted around 1.5 mile near a “new standing pond” that did not drain fully. You will go around this area and it will be marked. This will shorten the out and back a small amount.
  • Another course change is past mile 8.0 near Goldstream Sports. Traditionally you will follow the trail past Goldstream Sports then pop out on the road. This year ALL full and half marathoners will stay on the trail a little longer and come to a driveway and then pop out on the road. Full marathoners will continue up towards Ester Dome, half marathoners will turn around at this point on the road. This will be marked and volunteers will be there.
  • If you have family or friends supporting/cheering you on, keep in mind that Ester Dome Road will be closed and only open to those that live up there. There will be someone up there checking for Equinox Passes to let race organizers through. They can park below and walk up.

Let me know if you have any questions.
